About ChargeStar

RAC WA have chosen E-Station to supply the hardware and ChargeStar to supply the software for the RAC Electric Highway™ that stretches from Perth to the Margaret River region in Western Australia. The electric highway provides DC and AC charging via DC CHAdeMO/CCS Combo 1 cables and AC Type 1 (J1772) cables. There are two charge stations at each site.

The Electric Highway encourages the use of clean and sustainable electric vehicle transport by providing infrastructure that eliminates range issues and facilitates fast charging of electric vehicles. Local council authorities will provide sites for the charging stations. The rollout commenced with the opening of the Margaret River charging station on the 22nd June 2015.

The stations will fast charge an electric vehicle to 80% charge in twenty minutes. E-Station and ChargeStar provide driver management services for the network.


Two types of charging station are located at each destination on the RAC Electric Highway® , DC fast charging and AC slow charging.

Trio Fast Charging Station with Tesla Model S Compatible AC Charging Cable

The Trio fast charging station has three cables, CHAdeMO fast charging, CCS Combo 1 fast charging and an AC cable that can deliver up to 43kW AC to type 2 IEC62196-2 (Mennekes) compatible cars such as the Tesla Model S.

Charging time depends on the size of the battery pack and method of charging, DC or AC. Most car batteries will charge from flat to 80% in twenty minutes on a DC fast charge. AC charging times range from four to eight hours. Please refer to your vehicle manual to seek clarification about charging times.
Chargers are available on a first-come basis.

If there appears to be a machine fault

If I have no credit on my card (if credit is required)
If I get to charging station but do not have a card
If I get to a charging station and someone else is charging that has not booked or appears to be taking longer than required than their usual charge time.

PLEASE NOTE: This service is managed independently. Please do not call the RAC Roadside Assistance as they will be unable to assist with your inquiry.

The price of charging is set at 45 cents per kWh of electricity consumed + $1 per charging session to cover transaction costs.

Drivers can purchase Charging Units in the following amounts:


1 kWh of electricity = 4.5 Charging Units, which equates to the rate of 45 cents per kWh at a cost of 10 cents per Charging Unit.

Please note: 1 Charging Unit does not equal 1 kWh (as per Australian convention) due to the international design of the payment software used by ChargeStar Genie.

Your ChargeStar Genie card must be pre-paid with charging units in advance by logging into your account.

The charging stations are manufactured by Circontrol S.A, a leading provider of electric vehicle charging technology solutions. Circontrol SA has an installed base of more than 10,000 charging stations worldwide.
