NEXTCHARGE Smart Phone Application.

The NEXTCHARGE smart phone application is designed to allow drivers initiate and pay for charging sessions on charging stations that are not equipped with credit/debit card readers. NEXTCHARGE enables payment by Credit/Debit card, PayPal. Android Pay, Google Pay and Wallet (pay in advance and avail of reduced transactions charges). NEXTCHARGE uses the Braintree payments platform and is fully compliant with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).

Using The Next Charge Smart Phone App.

The Next Charge Application can be downloaded from any of these links or directly installed on to the smart phone from Google Play, Itunes or Microsoft App Store:

Initiating and paying for a charging session

  • Download the NEXTCHARGE application.
  • Open the NEXTCHARGE application.
  • Accept the policy terms and conditions.
  • A split screen window is displayed. The upper half is a map of charging stations. The lower half is a display of stations listed in proximity order.
  • Restrict the view to stations managed by Charge Star. Select the greyed out green man icon on the right-hand side of the screen.
  • Select a station (e.g. City of Swan DC from the list or from the map (zoom in)).
  • Select start charge.
  • A list of available plugs is displayed.
    • The number of plugs displayed will depend on the station, AC, DC or both AC and DC.
  • Select a plug and confirm the selection.
  • Select payment method.
    • There are three types of payment.
      • Credit card/Debit card/Paypal.
      • Android or Apple Pay.
      • Wallet.
        • Used with NEXTCHARGE RFID card.
        • Pay for credit in advance. Transaction costs are lower.
      • Coupon.
        • Used for promotions.
  • Select credit card/debit card/Paypal option.
  • Select credit or debit card option.
  • Enter credit or debit card details.
    • The card details only have to be entered the first time the applications is used.
  • Confirm the pre-authorisation amount.
    • This is required to validate the credit card. The pre-authorisation amount is refunded.
  • The charging session is activated. The application prompts the user to plug the charging cable into the car.
  • The charging session will timeout if the cable is not plugged into the car within 60 seconds.
    • No payment is taken from the credit/debit card if the charging session times out.


The NEXTCHARGE wallet is designed to reduce credit card transaction charges. Drivers can buy credit in advance and avoid paying a credit card transaction fee each time a charging session is activated on a paid charging station. The wallet is used with an RFID card. The RFID card is issued to the driver when the driver activates the wallet. The charging session fee is deducted from the wallet each time the RFID card is used to activate a charging session. The RFID card can be used independently of the NEXTCHARGE application. Some drivers leave the RFID card in the car all the time.

NB: The funds in the wallet expire after twelve months if the RFID card is not used at a paid station for a year. This can happen if the driver only ever uses the RFID card at free stations. NEXTCHARGE sends a reminder email to the driver when the funds are about to expire. The driver can either top up the wallet or apply to Charge Star for a refund if the funds expire. Deposits cannot be held longer than a year without a banking licence.

Activating the wallet and applying for an RFID card.

  • Select the orange menu button in the top right corner of the map.
  • Select “Click to register/login” at the top of the next screen.
  • Enter name and email address.
    • Use an email address you can access on your phone.
  • Select “save”.
  • NEXTCHARGE sends a confirmation email to the driver’s email address.
  • Open the email and click on the confirmation link to go the confirmation page.
  • Select “Open NEXTCHARGE” from the confirmation page.
  • Select the orange menu button in the top right corner of the map.
  • A “Your Account/Your Name” option will be displayed at the top of the screen.
  • Select the “Your Account Option”.
  • Drag the “Select Credit” at the bottom of the screen to the right to select credit.
  • Select “Buy Credit”.
    • Push the screen upwards with your thumb to select the buy credit option. On some phones the buy credit option is hidden.
  • Select the appropriate payment method.
  • Confirm the purchase.
  • First time users are presented with a form.
  • Complete the details on the form and submit using the arrow in the top righthand corner of the screen.
  • An RFID card will be issued from Balcatta in Perth to the address specified in the form.

There is no fee for the RFID card. Cards are issued for free.

Payment Calculation.

The payment calculation only applies to paid charging stations.

  • A fee of between 30 and 45 cents per kWh will be levied on members of the public who charge at paid charging stations. The fee is shown on the information screen under the “START charge” button.
  • The fee is set by the charging station provider such as a local authority. All charging fees less transaction charges are reimbursed to the charging station provider.
  • There is a flagfall fee of 37 cents payable by the driver levied on each charging session.

Other NEXTCHARGE Features.

  • NEXTCHARGE provides real time status updates such as state of charge, kWh used and start/end of charge notifications.
  • Stations can be monitored by adding them to the favourites list. Select the heart icon on the station map screen. NEXTCHARGE sends a notification each time a favourite station is used.
  • The application stores and displays the charging history.
  • NEXTCHARGE has an itinerary feature that calculates whether or not charging is required for a particular trip.
