Why Kempower?

DC Charging Stations – Modularity and Expandability

Typically, standard 175 kW DC charging stations charge two cars at the same time and 50 kW DC charging stations charge one car at a time. It is not possible to expand a standard 175 kW station to charge 4 cars at the same time or a 50 kW station to charge two or more cars at the same time. Increasing capacity in terms of numbers of cars charging means installing more charging stations, e.g. say 4 * 175 kW stations to charge 8 cars and say 4 * 50 kW stations to charge 4 cars. Each station houses its own power modules and the stations cannot talk to each other with respect to load balancing without an external load management system.

Kempower Model

The Kempower solutions are designed to be modular and expandable allowing for an increase in the number of charging spots without the need to install more stations. The key advantages of the Kempower solution are:

(1) The number of charging spots can be increased without the need to install additional charging stations/cabinets.

(2) Each car can charge at maximum capacity when multiple cars are charging. For example a standard 150 kW station with two charging cables spits the power evenly between two cars charging at the same time. Each car gets a maximum of 75 kW even if one car can only take 40 kW and the other car can take 110 kW. The 35 kW not required by the car drawing a maximum of 40 kW is not used at all. The Kempower solution gives one car 40 kW and the other car 110 kW ensuring that all of the available 150 kW of power is used.

(3) The satellite post configuration with cable management makes it easier to orientate car parking spaces for charging as most cars can nose in or park parallel in the traditional service station manner.

(4) The Kempower C-Series/S-Series solution is very price competitive for DC charging installations requiring 3 or more parking spots.

C-Station Cabinet with 2 charging cables attached

The C-Station is a traditional cabinet solution with two cables attached directly to the cabinet. However, the Kempower C-Station is one of the few 50 kW units on the market that can charge two cars at the same time. Most other 50 kW stations can only charge one car at a time. Charging two cars at the same time is a huge advantage because drivers do not like queuing for a charge and favour stations where there are two charging spots even if charging takes longer. Drivers consistently favour locations where there are multiple charging spots in order to minimise queuing time for charging.

The C-Station is more cost effective for two charging spots but does not offer the expansion capability of the C-Series/S-Series. The question is will the site owner require more charging spots in the future? If the answer is yes then the C-Series/S-Series may be the better option even if the upfront cost is higher.

C-Series Cabinet with S-Series satellites (1 post, 2 dispensers) - expand from 2 to 16 charging spots

The C-Series cabinet with S-Series satellites is designed to provide simultaneous load balanced DC fast charging for multiple electric vehicles.

The power modules are stored in 1 cabinet (c-series). Up to 16 dispensers (8 s-series twin cable satellite posts) can be attached to a single cabinet. Start with a 50 kW module and 1 s-series twin cable satellite post. The 50 kW is shared between cars when two cars are charging. Add 3 * 50 kW modules to the cabinet and expand to 8 dispensers. The 200 kW is shared over up to 8 cars charging at the same time. Add another 200 kW to allow 16 cars charging at the same time.

Each dispenser will charge at up to 200 kw which is far in excess of the charging capacity of most cars. The Kempower control unit will load balance the available power over all the cars.

Site owners are advised to prewire the site for at least 8 parking spaces even if the initial intention is for a 50 kW charging facility with 1 parking space or a 175 kW charging facility with two parking spaces. Prewiring the site for expansion is massively cheaper than retrofitting extra wiring and cabling at a later stage.

Each C-Series cabinet can be expanded up to 200 kW and up to 3 cabinets can operate in tandem providing 600 kW shared over up to 16 charging spots.

The Kempower C-Series/S-Series solution is very similar in concept to the Tesla supercharger design where power is shared out from a central cabinet over multiple stalls.

Kempower T-Series

Movable DC Charging

The Kempower T-Series is a movable EV charger that is suitable for electric cars, commercial electric vehicles, electric trucks, lorries, vans, buses and off-highway vehicles. It is weatherproof and suitable for both outdoor and indoor use. All you need is your EV and electricity and you are good to go. Simply plug the charger into the wall, allow a few minutes for the charger to turn on and update the software, and you are ready to charge.

Kempower T-Series offers 40 kW of pure charging power and has a simultaneous dual charging option providing 20 kW from each channel. It can handle dirt, water, dust, snow – you name it, T-Series is up for it. The durable design does not compromise on user-friendliness either. The intuitive and universal touch screen guarantees a simple charging experience for everyone from beginners to the most experienced EV drivers.

Take the power with you

T-Series is built to follow you wherever you need to re-charge your electric vehicle. The only criterion for a successful charging experience is, that you have electricity and a 63 A or a 32 A wall socket to plug the T-Series charger into. The design of T-Series is ideal for various locations and terrains. Thanks to the low center of gravity, light weight and large, robust wheels, T-Series is easily movable, ergonomic and well-balanced.

The perfect electric bus companion

Depot Charging

Omexom in Norway will build the largest bus depot above the polar circle for electric buses. Kempower will be part of this large operation with its chargers which are accustomed to work in extremely cold and difficult climatic regions.

The terminal will have a total of 50 charging points, which gives complete flexibility to the installation, where 32 buses can charge simultaneously (24 places for solo buses and 15 places for articulated buses).

There will also be 44 parking spaces for charging, of which 36 will be suitable for 18.7m or 12 m long buses, while the remaining 8 spaces will be for 12m buses. The chargers will provide 30 kW but can easily be upgraded to 40 kW.

The 18.7 meters long articulated electric buses are charged overnight while the buses are stationary parked at the depot, typically 4-8 hours. On some depot cases, utilizing adaptive EV charging with Kempower dynamics, EV bus depot’s charging capacity can be used for daytime charging at higher power level on those buses that change their routes during the day. This in turn improves usage level of the investment.
